To celebrate Yorkshire Day, we’ve compiled a list of great days out for children, featuring our favourite places to visit in our beautiful county.
We are fortunate to live in such a beautiful area filled with places to learn, explore and grow. From family days out, museums, farms and cafes; here are Ghyll Royd pupils’ top five places for you to visit with your children:
Bolton Abbey Estate is a beautiful local site – fun for all ages. It costs just £10 per car for admission to the site and there’s plenty to see and do. Bring a picnic and eat on the beach; bring your swimsuits, like our Form 6 class did during Enrichment week, and dive in to the water; or bring your walking boots and wellies for the Bolton Abbey welly walk. The walk features balance beams, mazes, tunnels and more obstacles leading you on a fantastic woodland adventure trail. At Ghyll Royd School, we’re all about getting outside! This month, Bolton Abbey brings you an outdoor cinema showing ‘The Greatest Showman’ and ‘Harry Potter and the Philosopher Stone’ both highly recommended by Ghyll Royd pupils. Make sure you end your day with a trip to Billy Bob’s Ice-Cream Parlour!

Harlow Carr Gardens has everything you could possibly want for a gorgeous day out in the Yorkshire countryside. Located just outside of Harrogate, the Gardens are filled with beautiful pathways decorated with trees and wildflowers. There are sculptures dotted around the Gardens, adding to the beauty of this wonderful space. And for the children, there’s a brilliant woodland play area. It costs £29 for a family ticket but the centre offers discounts for car free travellers. And you can treat yourself at the end with a hot chocolate or fat rascal (or both?!) from Bettys! Take a look at our most recent visit to the Gardens!

Bradford Science and Media Museum
For the inevitable rainy day, take the family along to the National Science and Media Museum in Bradford City Centre. The museum is brilliant for all ages with lots of fun and exciting exhibitions happening all year long. Our Pre-School classes would definitely recommend the WonderLab exhibit! They had a SENSE-sational trip earlier this year where they explored the five senses in an exciting, colourful laboratory. Entry to the museum and exhibitions are free of charge but you may need to book space in the exhibitions in advance! Bring a few pennies for some of the games which cost between 50p and £1.00.

Harewood House’s Summer calendar always has something exciting going on. Ghyll Royd pupils regularly visit Harewood House to explore the wonderful gardens and, of course, to see the friendly, cuddly penguins soaking up the sunshine in their outdoor pool. Take a trip around the gorgeous grounds before settling down to watch a live adaptation of the children’s book ‘The Princess and the Giant Outdoor Theatre. Tickets are available here.

A list celebrating great days out for children in Yorkshire would not be complete without mentioning the Ilkley Lido. The Lido is infamous across West Yorkshire and has been a blessing during this long, hot summer! Hundreds of families flock to the Lido every summer to enjoy a splash in the sun. Our pupils always enjoy their trips to the Lido for a fun end of year swimming session!
